I have a love, love, love, hate relationship with my Malacasa dinnerware. First, these are genuine porcelaine bone china (flash them in front of a light and put your hand behind the plate to see what I mean) which makes them the most resistant technology for plates available. They are scratch resistant against steak knives and feel solid yet light.
Secondly they seriously look gorgeous. The gold rim also is a nice touch and are dishwasher and microwave safe... Seriously, for the money these are amazing bowls and plates. I know they are "basic" white plates but that's what I like about them instead of frivolous stupid designs that mess up your meal presentation. There's a reason why restaurent use white plates, with the gold rim though, they look premium.
Third, the customer service is impeccable. I'll get into that in a second.
The "hate" part though is how they pack their plates. Honestly, the shipping boxes are great, the padded material awesome, everything SHOULD arrive in perfect condition... however, after buying a few of their boxes, many of the plates arrived scratched, damaged, chipped and useless. My theory is that they have ZERO quality control at the factory, do not check if the plates are in good condition before shipping and just pack it all in without thinking.
Which brings me back to customer service. I told MALACASA about it and their rep (Sana) was absolutely fantastic. Not only was she friendly, professional and dare I say... nearly loving? Maybe nurturing would be a better word, but it felt like she actually really cared the way that a family member would. She promptly sent me a FULL set of replacement dishes (which of course some of them were facing the same chipping issues) but all and all, even though I had to throw out a few plates, the replacements made up for it. On top of that, she even gave me a small discount on my order as an additional apology.
Honestly, I should have written this review sooner and it's only because they sent me an email 3 months later to check up on me and see if I was satisfied that I decided to write this 5 stars review.
We've been using our MALACASA Nori gold rims for the past 3 months now and have had zero problems putting them in the dishwasher, cutting big steaks on them with sharp knives and enjoying the beauty that they are. I just wished that they had better QC at their factory, but since their customer service is so exceptional, it makes up for it if a frustration appears on your order.
Don't hesitate even if they seem more expensive that other brands, this is legit the best you can get at this price point.
